What's your opinion on some of the ones out in the market? Which are the easiest to use for a novice, and who's giving the best support?
Digi seem to do a decent selection - but are they just on the shelf gathering dust?
Your opinions please.

I purchased the PICDEMZ development kit with 2 PICKDEMZ boards and two radios.
The problem is that the PICKDEMZ boards use a 18F4620 and it only has enough
memory to run the demo. After 60 days the C18 compiler reduces its optimization
and you can no longer get the demo code to fit.
I would not suggest it.

Hi Dan,
All Microchip demoboards can normally be operated with the free evaluation version of the compilers which has no optimization.
The PICDEM Z enables evaluation of both MiWi & ZigBee.
Which code did you try to compile and did not fit ?
If more Flash is needed you may want to consider another 40 pins PIC18 using MAPS parametric selector .
i.e the PIC18F4685 has 96KB FLASH.
If it is pin compatible with PIC18F4620, you could simply order a couple of samples and replace the PIC18F4620
