Low power transceiver for 27-MHz band features star network management

By operating in the 27-MHz worldwide ISM (industrial, scientific and medical) band the austriamicrosystems AS3900 avoids the interference found in the crowded 2.4-GHz band and reduces the amount of energy being absorbed by the human body (SAR or specific absorption rate), an obvious consideration for transmitters functioning in medical networks on or close to a human body.

The AS3900 features austrimicrosystems’ built-in star network management protocol, which is hard wired and royalty-free.

 

The transceiver requires only 2.5 µA in polling mode, and typically 3.8 and 4.9 mA in receive and transmit modes respectively, and these figures include the power required to manage the star network.

 

 

The AS3900 transmits data at up to 212 Kbit/s and integrates such functions as the power amplifier, clock, 24 bits of one-time programmable memory, battery level detection, power on reset (POR) and system timers.

 

The AS3900 transceiver is available in a 5x5 mm 28-pin QFN package, operates from a 2.2 Volt power supply, and has an ambient operating temperature range of -40 to +85°C.

    Some additional info which I think is very relevant for the product:

     

     

    • Operating supply voltage 2.2V to 3.6V (Functional down to 2.0V)
    • Rx current consumption 3.8 mA (typ.)
    • Tx current consumption 4.9 mA@0dBm, 7.6 mA @10dBm
    • Maximum output power 10 dBm (delivered to matching network and antenna)
    • Receiver sensitivity –85 dBm @ 105 kbit/s
    • Polling mode average current consumption typ. 2.5μA
    • Power down current consumption max. 700nA
    • Typ. communication range using small antenna 1.2m@0dBm, 2.5m@10dBm

     

     

    With this kind of range and low bandwidth I don't find the chip comparable to most 2.4GHz solutions.

     

    Has any one been experimenting on this band otherwise?
