Newbie needs wireless help

I'm beginning a new sensing system development, and this will be the first time that my company's done anything with wireless.  I have absolutely no experience, so please excuse my utter ignorance, and please talk to me like a 3 year old.  The problem is, we want to transmit at least 120kB/s and possibly up to 100MB/s from our system to a host computer at least one mile away.  It also has to be small (preferably the size of  a zigbee board or similar) and low-power (let's say 500mW max).  There is the possibility that we could stream data from our system to a beefy middle-man nearby that could then transmit the data on to the host computer.  In that case, the constraints on my system are still there, but the middle-man could be as bulky and hungry as necessary.  Can anyone please help me get started?  Typical devices, protocols, manufacturers, development kits, etc.  Anything will help.  Thank you!!!

Hi Matt, 100Mbyte/sec is very high throughput (and 120kbyte/sec is high too). I think the only convenient way could be an

optical link or some microwave link maybe. These won't be the size of a zigbee board. If your application is sensing, you may not need this throughput (unless you're transmitting multiple high-def video streams).

Unfortunately, that is in fact our data rate.  We have two different options: dumping raw data or processing on-board and streaming down-sampled data.  Our raw data is far higher resolution than anyone (except us) really needs, and it amounts to about 85MB/s.  We MIGHT be able to process on-board and still meet our desired update rate requirements.  If so, at that point we can down-sample our data significantly.  I threw out 120kB/s, but we could probably get away with 20kB/s or so.  If so, does that open up more options?

    Hi Matt,

A 100mW wifi module (i.e. 20dBm) with a directional antenna could work, see this link where Cian was able to see networks 2.5km away. Another alternative would be to use a mobile network, e.g. a 3G module.
