Wifi vs Bluetooth

If WiFi and Bluetooth both work on a frequency of 2.4 GHz then why does WiFi have a far better data transfer rate as compared to Bluetooth? I am asking this on the basis of WiFi-Direct Technology that is used in smartphones. The data transfer rate for WiFi is in Mbps while in Bluetooth it is in Kbps.

    Hi

You can gain much understanding if you look at the history of WiFi and Bluetooth. Wifi is a Wireless LAN, so it's being used to connect networks of computers together. This requires a high data rate. Bluetooth was designed for PAN or personal area networks, initially as cable replacement (RS232), so it was never required to have high data rates. However, I notice you mention the frequencies; Bluetooth uses a frequency hopping scheme to achieve it's connection/transfer, and the most popular WiFi uses OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing). I.e. they send data using different modulation schemes.
