Replace SIM with SDcard

Former Member
Former Member over 13 years ago

Hello,

I am trying to build a very small device able to do tracking.

I thought of using a GSM module and a GPS module.

In order to reduce its size as much as possible I've come to the idea of trying to integrate the SIM in SDcard. Is it possible?

Practicly the SIM is also a memory so if I allocate a specific area within the SDcard for this purpose, theoreticaly I think it should work.

Alternatively I was thinking of using the smallest SIM manufactured. Can someone recomend me some providers?

Thanks!

    Hi Alexandru,

I'm afraid I cannot directly answer your question, however I draw your attention to GCT's new range of push-pull Micro SIM connectors, you might decide that the space saving using a Micro SIM card offer that you might choose to go in that direction.  See Element 14 link here: http://www.element14.com/community/docs/DOC-49142/l/news-release-new-economical-push-pull-micro-sim-connector

Essentially the Micro SIM connector has exactly the same contact layout as the 'standard' SIM Card (also known as Mini SIM) but in a smaller card size.  I'm sorry I can't recommend a suppluier of Micro SIM cards, but I'm sure that someone on this forum can! Hope this infomation is of use to you?

I think that you would find it difficult to achieve, as you would have to re-program the firmware in the GSM module to read/write data from a completely differant location.  Seems like a lot of work to do to save about 0.3g.
