Yea, new to Pi. How does it WiFi?

I picked up an Alfa AWUS036NHR USB wifi adapter and an EdiMax USB wifi adapter. I can't seem to get either one of them to connect. The alfa scans and identifies the network, but won't connect. Same with the Edimax.

I also got a CAT5 cable to go from my laptop to the Pi if that will work, but I don't know what to do once they are plugged into each other.

So, any help would be nice.

And please, assume I know nothing about what you are about to explain, so give a little preliminary before going too far.

Eventually, I want to attach a webcam to my radio controlled lawn mower, send an image back to my laptop. Once that works out, I want to go the next step and make the lawn mower autonomous, using ultrasonic location and GPS.

I got the book, Raspberry Pi for dummies, but I'm not very happy with the explanations or should I say, the lack of depth to them. It's a good book if you want to make kids games with your Pi.

Maybe a suggestion for a better book would even be helpful.

Thanks,

Martin

Well,,... I first have to thank you for sending me the info. I did get the book and have got to chapter 4. I must say that book is much better than the Pi for Dummies. Thank you again. The link you sent…

Hi Martin, good to know that you found the book helpfull.. reflashing the sd card is a good idea, you might aswell scan the card for viruses and format the card.. We all go through that phase, and come…

The link you sent was informative, but I could not get it to work for me.

Pi no longer boots and I will be reflashing the SD card. No big deal.

I just can't seem to figure out why the WiFi units won't work.

I have got to be doing something wrong.

I guess I am at the phase where I don't know what I don't know. LOL.

I will try to find a local Pi club or group.

I really need to talk with someone on the phone or in person.

Thanks again, I really do appreciate the help.
