where will I find a wiring diagram of your project?

sjbaxter  Fair question.  If the objective is just to achieve serial communications... buy the solution and move on.

If the objective is to learn, teach or apply the knowledge of serial communication, building is the better path.  You have to, and you get to, make the decisions on features, packaging, connections, all that stuff that just is with the purchased solution.  If you are the budding Engineer designing a product, you've got to figure all that out - just like Katie did.  And when it doesn't go right, you get to figure out the solution.  Awesome learning.

I am always intrigued by the things people build in this Community because it shows such a breadth of creativity.  "See a need. Fill a need." - as Bigweld says.  I also gain MUCH more understanding through these types of projects.  Finally, it causes me to ask myself, "Where can I apply this knowledge?"  Sometimes, these projects are launching pads for other, possibly bigger, projects.

Why not just use your mobile phone with a serial monitor app on it and a USB<->Serial adapter? That's what I've been using for the last 10 years in the field. Just seems an expensive BOM cost for something you already have in your pocket.

I'm hoping it'll be useful, have wished I'd had something like it several times previously and come up with other solutions, but a box ready to be plugged it seems like it'll be handy.

That's a great idea, I hadn't thought of doing that. It'd make a really useful v2, continuous monitoring for later review would be so useful in so many situations
