Playing 3D Famicom Games Wirelessly on the NES - How Hard Could It Be? -- Episode 593

Nintendo has an interesting history of including stereoscopic 3D in its game consoles, such as the Virtual Boy and 3DS handheld. But before any of those, the Famicom 3D System was released in Japan. Andy wonders if he can repurpose a pair of wireless LCD shutter glasses, and use them to get 3D Famicom games working on the Nintendo Entertainment System. Will his experiment lead to a whole new dimension of gaming on the NES, or will it be a failure on multiple levels?

Thanks! It wasn't my idea but it worked okay. If I do any more expansion port projects, I'll probably redesign the connector.

I am not a gamer, but I enjoyed your journey to make the 3D work.

Really impressed that you were able to kludge together your own expansion connector by repurposing the ISA contacts.

Yeah, I'm glad they didn't change the expansion port between the two systems. Otherwise I probably would have had to do some ROM hacking, and I really wanted to stick with using the original cartridge.

I like that idea. I'd have to figure out what should trigger them exactly, though. Would I have to expose myself to repeated peril during testing?

With a bit of AI, you could perhaps turn those shutter glasses into a pair of 'Joo Janta 200 Super-Chromatic Peril Sensitive Sunglasses' from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

It is interesting how similar/compatible the NES is to the the Famicom. It could have been a much tougher port.

The NES was my first console in 2001, it works pretty well and it was super fun to play. Nice video!
