We compare the inside of a 1988 1G carphone to it's 2013 great grand child. Other than a big color screen, what else has changed? We tear both down to take a look.

    Good (and sensible logic) for the additional wire, but not quite! A commenter on YouTube has correctly stated the answer, although he appears to have worked for the manufacturer, so it was cheating a little!

    That fourth wire if it was used in a car type situation follows a standard scheme, black for ground, yellow for constant 12v and red for switched, the purple wire is the sound output for connection to the right hand speaker in the car, with the ground attached to the black wire.

     

    If this is a car phone as stated, then that would be the colour scheme that fits as that is the standard colour scheme followed on all aftermarket car equipment from the early 80’s onwards, if you trace the purple wire back you will find it’s coming from the audio output.
