My main reason for suggesting the BlueTooth Unleashed Design Challenge was to promote what I believe will be an explosion of Bluetooth-enabled devices in the coming years. So, I wanted element14 to participate in this explosion of Bluetooth design and invention.
But I did go a step further. I wanted this Design Challenge to be open and flexible in the spirit of experimentation. So, the Design Challenge team agreed to offer a wide open kit featuring 10 different dev boards or SBCs, where the challenger would decide which board to base his or her design on. I felt (and I still do) that this freedom of choice would influence the Challengers' designs in interesting ways. For me, I thought the freedom of kit choice make this an interesting Design Challenge. Some of you may agree or disagree. That's fine.
In this respect, I kind of feel like Robert E. Peary who was the first guy to make it to the North Pole on April 16, 1909. But this time, I feel like our Design Challenge is like a tech adventurer.
Having a Design Challenge based up different boards would possibly make the Challengers more clever and imaginative. It could also teach our community about the boards themselves.
Clearly, a design based on a Cypress PSoc 6 will be different from a Red Bear Blend board featuring the Atmel ATmega32U4 and the Nordic BLE nRF8001 chip. To me, that's okay. I'm interested in seeing how our Challengers would leverage their board of choice.
I can imagine the possibilities of Bluetooth with this Design Challenge. For some, it might be like a tightrope walker: a bit risky. But that's fine, too.
I encourage anyone who is interested to select your board of choice and submit application. Tell us how you want to unleash Bluetooth.
