Why I Think You Should Apply for the 'Experimenting with Inductors' Competition

Imagine the world with inductors. Kind of a silly statement, don't you think?

Inductors are one of those basic energy storage devices that enable the design of so many different kinds of circuits. Filters, power supplies, power factor correction, the list goes on. But how many of you REALLY understand how inductors work?

Consider a coil of wire. So, what more do you need to know, right? When I wrote the inductors quiz, I spent some time researching inductors. I was must impressed by the theoretical part of them at first -- Ampere's Law, Lenz's Law, Faraday's Law, Maxwell's Equations.  But theory is one thing, practical application quite another.

All these Laws were derived through experiments--I'm sure Faraday had a more primitive "lab" than most of the maker/hobbyists on element14 today. But look at what he accomplished!

The 'Experimenting with Inductors' competition was created in the spirit of these early experimenters, scientists, natural historians, tinkerers--innovators to use the parlance of the 21st Century.

So, submit an application. Try it, you'll like it!

Very true. Inductors, capacitors and resistors are the basic elements found in any electronic circuit. Already submitted my application!

Looks like another great competition with very nice prizes. I had fun with the Experimenting with Polymer Capacitors: About the Competition competition. I'd encourage everyone to apply.

This is a wonderful opportunity, and well suited to students and new element14 members. Looking forward to lots of great projects!

Randall is it ok to focus on different kind of inductors, than the ones provided by kemet? I have some ideas on stuff I would like to explore with different type of inductors.

To me that sounds like a great idea. Possibly when you choose another conductor, you can explain why one was more appropriate for your project versus another in the Kismet kit. This would help other learn as well. Anyway that was my two cents worth.
