Waterproofing the RJ45 Connection

ralphjy
ralphjy over 2 years ago

I've been looking for a solution that would allow me to operate the RJ45 connection in a waterproof condition.  I had posted a question on the Amphenol Product Forum with hope that an Amphenol rep might be monitoring it.  shabaz  was nice enough to give me a quick reply.  I realized that I should have posted on this forum.

I think that I found the solution that that I was looking for, but I'd still like to verify that with a Product Specialist.  I asked charlieo21  for his contact.

I found an Amphenol IP67 connector backshell (basically a rubber boot) that is IP67 rated - IP67 Boot for our Harsh Environment products.

The one specifically for the RJ45 is this one - MUSBRAHD2241SK Connector Backshell, Hood, Amphenol Standard USB and RJ Plug Connectors, 180°, Rubber Body.

I wonder if rscasny  would be willing to supply these?

We have started receiving the RJ45 connector hoods. So, we are sending them out as they come in.

Hi Ralph, The holes should not match with the socket holes if this part is fitted, because the two holes on the socket are for screwing to the enclosure. The holes on the cover also screw into the enclosure…

Actually, I was sitting here looking at the panel connector and now I'm a bit concerned.  The picture in the post was from Digi-Key.

Here is the view looking into the panel connector:

It seems like the screw holes in the backshell are in the wrong corners.

Even more confusing is that here is the picture from Newark which has the interface piece flipped around - but the backshell holes also flipped?  There must be a removable piece on the end of the rubber backshell:

So, maybe a conversation with a Product Specialist is required.  I think this could be made to work.

    Hi Ralph,

The holes should not match with the socket holes if this part is fitted, because the two holes on the socket are for screwing to the enclosure. The holes on the cover also screw into the enclosure, but in two different holes, according to the diagram below. The diagram mentions clearance for "receptacle panel screw" which is for the screws for the RJ45 socket. I believe it doesn't interfere with the mounting of the socket, it covers the cable entry side if the enclosure or environment does not provide any other protection.

Yes, that makes sense.  I did not think about extra holes in the enclosure to mount the cable boot.  The picture from the Newark site confused me.

If I think about this like PC D connectors mount  - I need standoffs on the enclosure side and thumbscrews on the boot.

    Thanks for pointing that out.
