Introduction
Running is one of the world most popular and favorite activity for maintaining fitness. The sport involves both aerobic and anaerobic metabolism in different proportions. It is estimated that total of 621Million people run to maintain the health and fitness in different forms(https://askwonder.com/research/globally-people-practice-running-as-sport-global-market-size-sport-dba00dqvc) It’s more than 10% of the world population.
Being said that this Yale medicine study states that 50% percent of the runners faces injuries.

What are the injuries:
-
Accidents caused by external bodies
-
Bad form
-
Over usage of muscles and tendons
-
Lack of rest
-
Genetic issues
Let’s look at the injuries due to bad form:
-
Back pain
-
Knee pain/runners knee
-
And plenty more!
How to prevent injuries due to bad form?
There are clinical setups where It can monitor the runner while running in a treadmill and analysis the posture and form and give an analysis of the running form. But unfortunately these facilities are super expensive to access and usually restricted to tier 1 and tier 2 athletes who appear in games.
What is the project about?
I am proposing a virtual trainer assistance and form analyzer for runners.
Project will target to build the physical setup and analytical tool for form analysis and posture correction.
The salient features of the project includes
-
Easy to use setup
-
Portable setup – So that device can be carried around and used in home/apartment gyms
Project setup
The project setup consists of three elements
-
Camera 1 – For capturing landing pattern of the runner
-
Camera 2 – For capturing side profile of the runner (Optional : Same can be done with the Camera 1)
-
Processing unit for processing the video captured from the cameras
Camera 2 will monitor
-
pronation and supination angle
-
Foot landing pattern – Mid foot, Toe landing, heel landing
Camera 1 will monitor the following parameters
-
Stride form
-
Loading effect on the knee
-
Loading angle
-
Different angles at critical musculoskeletal joints
Future Upgrades / What excites me about this project:
- An accelerometer with Bluetooth can be attached to the runners body to study the impact and potential damage to the knee
- Multi lead EMG (Electromyogram) Can be added to the setup to study how the muscle fibers or group of muscles are activated while taking each stride.
- An ECG (Electrocardiogram) can be added, to study the heart health while running. Which can monitor the following parameters
- Heart Rate
- HeartRate Variability
- Respiration Rate ( Through HRV Or Bio impedance )
- Monitoring Arrhythmia
Summary :
The project aims to make gait and form analysis much more affordable and available to the users so that they can run Injury free
