Design Challenge Prizes - What Do You Want?

nlarson
nlarson over 10 years ago

For those of you who have applied to compete in a Design Challenge at element14 Community what prizes did you feel motivated you the most to sign up? If you haven't applied, what prizes would motivate you the most to sign up and compete?  What prizes would you like to see that haven't been offered yet?  Does a goodie bag of products get you motivated? How about a chance to meet and spend a day with your electronics engineering "celebrity" or maybe mentoring sessions from an industry expert?

Please share your thoughts below to help us make prizes better for future Design Challenges.  (cc: Members Top Members RoadTests & Reviews element14Dave)

Thanks!

Perhaps another question to ask is: how many prizes ? Having more chances to win something may motivate competitors more to actually complete the challenge. For example, the Sudden Impact challenges has…

Here is an attempt to list the top 11 cool prizes for electronics experimenters in design challenges - in order of desirability:

    1. oscilloscope
    2. 3D printer
    3. camera for video blogging
    4. camera for macro photography
    5. bench power supply
    6. signal generator
    7. accurate DVM
    8. electronics CAD software
    9. android phablet
    10. prototyping breadboards and general purpose modules like PSoC kits, arduinos and RPi's
    11. e14 vouchers

I am lucky to have most of this stuff but still missing a decent signal generator, so for me #6 and #11 are probably more motivating.

Why #2, do you not like yours?

    Clem

BTW, vouchers work well if you have too many interests like me.

    Clem,

I like my 3D printer a lot - it is in almost constant use.

I actually have almost everything on that list, except #3 and #7.

    It is a list of what members might like ... I want #3, #7, #11 & #12

    Do you have the rebox

    if so

what is you main printed filiment

do you print on fine, normal, custom

do you have any issues with a un even bed (PEI does not sit perfectly flat ont he aluminium heat spreader ) causing the first layers to bottom out so no filement layed down and or not adhear to its neibours

    other common issues ?

As yo may be guessing, I am having these issues

Yes I have a Cel Robox.

It worked well from day 1.

I print in normal resolution - it is fine for all my needs and the surface on the PEI comes out as smooth as glass.

The PEI surface is spectacular - really good bond when hot and parts just pop off when it cools down.

The heat seems very uniform - I have printed maximum size flat panels and they adhere well everywhere while printing.

The self calibration at the start of every print is accurate enough that there are no problems with prints.

That is not to say that I don't have any problems, for a while I was getting some stringy hair when the valve wasn't closing properly during non-printing traverses - but it cleared itself after one print. There are a lot of little things to learn about making good prints, but I am not good about recording all the things I try, because it isn't clear before hand what will work and what won't - but then suddenly some little thing makes a big improvement.

As a rough guess about 80% of what I print turns out fully functional as planned on the first try. The other 20% is probably split between my measurement errors, design errors and printer failures. Some of the printer failures are simply things like the PLA filament is wound so tightly on the spool it won't feed off the spool. This is easy to free up on the fly, but with prints that take many hours it is not possible to be beside the printer at all times. The printer is actually pretty good about restarting after a filament jam, even hours later, but sometimes it leaves a gap that ends up in an area that is too weak in the finished part. Sometimes it can be fixed with glue.

All in all I am very happy with my Robox printer - it is about as easy to use as these devices can be and it has been surprisingly robust and surprisingly useful.

You need to figure out a way to get your printer tuned up - it will be worth it.
