Earlier this week, the element14 community was introduced to an exciting new Raspberry Pi Accessory, the RPiSoC, which is currently seeking funding through Kickstarter:

I'm pleased to say that Embedit Electronics, in collaboration with Cypress Semiconductor, have allocated 17 prototype units for the challengers involved in the Forget Me Not Challenge.  They are currently winging their way to our warehouse.

In order to obtain one of these highly exclusive boards, only the most compelling use cases will do.  The competitors are invited to submit their proposals as comments in reply to this blog.  Thank you.

I've spent all day thinking about this and this is my response. Thank you very very much for giving me the chance of getting this SOC add-on board to the Raspberry Pi. It is a very nice board indeed. BUT…

Looks like I can add a weather station to my project utilizing the PSoC. That would include measurements such as temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction. Maybe I can even add a rainfall sensor and barometric pressure. In the end I can use it to warn me to close open windows when a thunderstorm is happening (or even before, when detecting  a severe decrease in air pressure).

I can use the PSoC not only for its analog measurements (which are quite good with its 20 bit ADC), but also for its digital components. Wind speed and direction need a quadrature decoder, the humidity sensor most likely needs a I2C bus.

To communicate with the RPi, I probably will use an ethernet based solution. The weather station must be located on the outside (probably the roof), so I need a way to communicate with the inside. Ethernet at least doesn't need any additional hardware on the RPi side.

That changes things. I have a lot done partially hence I cannot post about em and part of the stuff is stuck in transit. The RPi B+ reached here half squished. I had to pry the USB port right. Logistics here suck!

In my case I have several sensors that will require using an external interface (ie not EnOcean).

This would solve the issue of getting the data back into the RPi.

It also allows for some external indications to granny when the temperature is below an acceptable limit, or the Humidity is too high.

This was something I contemplated during the planning stage but decided against implementing.

So it would be nice to be one of the 17, but regardless its a very nice gesture by all concerned.

    mark

It never hurts to have a backup plan image

Our intention is to get moving on shipping these units by mid to late next week
