I'm pleased to say that Embedit Electronics, in collaboration with Cypress Semiconductor, have allocated 17 prototype units for the challengers involved in the Forget Me Not Challenge.  They are currently winging their way to our warehouse.

    I was planning to use an Arduino connected via FTDI to the RPi to enable accessing ADCs for measuring Temperature and currents. Additionally the PWM were supposed to be connected to RGB leds which translate notifications in OpenHAB to various colors. Combination of RGB we can generate almost any shade of color. Additionally I was dependent of the Arduino to convert all the serial messages into corresponding actions as well as a little bit of filtering. I though of using the PSOC 5 (from the Cypress MBBR3 Kit but It cannot be programmed as is and making a board or buying one was not an option. The power of the PSOC is that things happen in hardware which means that I can have some digital logic doing one thing and another logic something else. The RPiSOC goes beyond it by providing tested python scripts that will enable it to be interfaced with OpenHAB directly. I will use the RPi SOC for...

     

    1. Controlling RGB LEDs to produce color indications. the RPiSOC can generate better PWM.

    2. Add a small display for notifications and messages. My current HDMI display is a bit TOO power hungry.

    3. Expose additional UART for connecting with the secondary sensor network.(XBEE because I plan to demonstrate how OpenHAB can also connect with non-standard networks using bindings)

    4. Measuring battery status and OFFLOAD the entire measure and compare and notify burden from the RPi to the RPiSOC Programmable Gain amplifier eliminates the need for me to build extra circuitry. I head there were Digital Filters available as well.

    5. I have a motor control planned in the future which will need the PWM outputs. Think wheels+motors+RPi+RPi Camera+WiFi+battery=  OpenHAB Controlled RPi Rover image  I have already done some work some time back.

     

    I can bypass my board making task and use this board directly. The python examples will make it simpler to interface with OpenHAB with the exec Binding/Serial binding.

    I wish to the Arduino Shield that these guys are using .

    It would be a great addition to the existing FHEM based online interface.

    This brings back memories from my DAS project. Since this uses PSoC5(kitchen sink! type image) there is lots more LUT unlike the PSoC4.

    I wish all the GPIO headers can be male pins to connect other modules.

    The stock image of the RpiSoc has lots API so many things can already be done even without the PSoC creator.

    Actually the USB bootloader means no need for MiniProg3.

    Lots of possibilities for additional analog sensors and real world controls.

     

    As simple to say RPi B+ & RPiSoC is great combo for real time processing with IoT. image
