In the Air Design Challenge - The Winners

A big thank you to all who participated in the In the Air IoT Design Challenge, the partners, element14 and the wider public have been deeply impressed by the projects we've seen to help create a greener, cleaner world.
It was not an altogether straightforward matter to pick a winner: however, in the end, we've awarded the prizes to the following individuals and their projects.
The Grand Prize
The Grand Prize has gone to Christever del Rosario of New Zealand for his Carbon Footprint Monitoring System.  His project's final summary can be read by clicking here.

Christever will receive:
  1. 15 inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display
  2. U1273A OLED Multimeter from Keysight

Community Choice Winner
The Community Choice Winner by a clear plurality of votes was Inderpreet Singh of India for his Firecracker Aftermath Analyzer.  His project's final summary can be read by Clicking here.

Additionally, we felt that two other projects deserved recognition as Honourable Mentions; both engineers will receive a SimpleLinkTm Bluetooth SmartRegistered/Multi-Standard SensorTag as a prize.

Thank you once again to all the participants for their time, energy and effort: we look forward to more innovative and exciting design challenges in 2015 coming to life.

  • On a technical level I thought Christever, Ambrogio and Janis did a fantastic job designing their solutions, as did Inderpreet, Dragan, Frederick and others and I hope they will continue to develop their projects over time.

    We get the choice to vote for only one, and it will always be kind-of strategic because we don't know who will win the top level prize and so understandably some will want to vote for a project that may not win the main prize but still is deserving - if I could, I would have voted for several projects, since there were technical elements of many projects that resonated with my interests, and it is valuable information that they published - even details about industrial sensor manufacturers, and cloud platform integration into solutions. All this information is really relevant for people interested in creating environment-related IoT solutions, and it is probably the only real resource on the Internet with this level of practical experience shared on this topic. People like Christever even posted full, detailed schematics, as did others, so if we want to then we have no excuse if we cannot replicate or build on these ideas.

     

    I was super-happy to recently learn that a project I worked on (a small project - an FPGA programmer for the BBB) was referenced in someone's university Master's degree project this year (they e-mailed me to let me know, and even gave me a copy of their report - and from that I learned a lot in return). And that was a tiny project. I wouldn't be surprised that the projects that Christever and others have produced, not just this design challenge, but other ones too, will become references for many people too - so it is super-valuable work since people can build on it, and the intangible rewards of knowing that you're part of a bigger community that helps each other are often incomparable to winning hardware. (Not saying that hardware isn't nice! Hehe.). But sometimes seeing a "thanks/like" if people learn something from one's work, is a pretty good feeling.
