SteelQuad: Steel Quality Sensing Device (week 4)

31 May 2014

This week I got to check with construction material suppliers and ask for a quotation. I've also negotiated a place where I can do my concrete mix, water curing, and conduct inductance test.

Here’s the list of materials needed:

  • Rebars
    • 10 mm dia.
      • Grade 33
      • Grade 40
      • Grade 60
    • 12 mm dia
      • Grade 33
      • Grade 40
      • Grade 60
  • Cement
  • Sand and gravel
  • PVC Pipe
    • 2" dia
    • 4" dia
  • Cover
  • hacksaw and blades
  • Tarpaulin
  • Shovel
  • Hollow Blocks
  • Tier Wire

The tarpaulin and hollow blocks will be used for concrete curing. There’s also a helpful video I saw on youtube regarding interfacing with other coils: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-Vg-ppdRGs

More exciting update in the coming weeks when I purchase the materials.

I mean, same batch of concrete but won't be touched until it's done curing. This phase will only be a prototype of my idea coz there are a lot of things to consider (e.g. strength of aggregate, temp., water quality, etc.) to make this scanning device 100% accurate. But I will surely continue this project even after the judging.

The idea of doing several tests during the cure sounds very interesting. In fact one of the more unusual experiments I've seen on E14!

On thing I was wondering when you said doing a separate batch is how consistent is any given batch from one to the next and is this in fact more than the differences in the cure strength or would add a large un known to the measurements?!

yeah. I've consider that. yet I'm also considering that it will affect the strength of the concrete. However, I can always do a separate group on same batch of concrete mix that won't be touch until done curing.

It sounds like you are organized to begin testing.

Can't wait to see what you come up with.

PS, have you thought of running some measurements while the cement cures?

You could get some valuable data by seeing if the values change over the 30 day curing cycle.
