Kazumi - 07 - 3D Modelling Part 2 (+lifeSupport)

Hey!

Today I have done the next steps of 3D modelling in order to build my prototype.

image

The pads will now have 6 electrodes each. This is due to 7 pins on the MPR121 breakout boards becoming available, as I am no longer going to use rotation and magnets to change key and access the menu.

These pads will be laser-cut from 1mm clear acrylic sheet. The electrodes will be cut out of adhesive copper foil like in the previous prototype, but this time the tracks will wrap around the acrylic to end as solder-points on the back-side. I will solder ribbon cables to these, with molex connectors at the other end to hook up to the MPR121 boards. Because of the clear acrylic, I will be able to shine RGB LEDs through each pad for light feedback.

I have also considered getting copper clad board and using a desktop milling machine (such as the Roland SRM-20) to achieve a similar result. This would have the benefit of not having to use any copper foil (one less process and one less material), the limitation would be that it would be opaque and I have a feeling that it would take longer (but I would have to try). Not sure if it would be more or less dampening than acrylic (it would also be thicker as the standard is 1.6mm as opposed to 1mm).

lifeSupport

This past week I have been busy building an installation for Rising Festival at Roundhouse London yesterday:

lifeSupport is an IV drip generative music installation powered by Bela platform. Four saline drip bags pick random notes from chords, each drip on a different octave, all tuned using just intonation. Parameters can be controlled in real-time.

I have found this one to be really good both with a flatbed plotter cutter and with a vinyl cutter: Techsoft Cutronic Foil

Can you tell me where you got the copper foil from?

    Thanks,

    Clem

    Yeah, self-adhesive copper foil.
