Puredata~ on BeagleBone Black

Hey guys, for those of us planning to use Pd~ for the Music Tech Challenge, I thought I'd start a thread where we can share tips and ask questions etc. so that it's all in one central location.

image

My progress so far:

  • Flashed Ubuntu to the eMMC of my BeagleBone
  • Configured it to work properly with my Motorola Atrix Lapdock (pictured above) so that I don't have to SSH in or connect to a monitor, mouse & keyboard all the time
  • Configured wireless networking via a tiny Edimax WiFi dongle (which was a bit of a headache)
  • Installed the LXDE desktop
  • Installed Puredata

Next step is to get Jack/ALSA working with one of my USB soundcards to test some stuff out. I'll add some links to resources that I found useful for some of these processes to this thread soon.

So, who else is going to come sit at the Pd~ table at lunch time? (Also known as the "cool kids" table)

After spending the week struggling to get my preferred C++ audio synthesis library compiled with my cross-compiler, I've started considering and looking into using Pd instead. I haven't got that far with it yet though.

    Hi Liam!

Was there cross-compiling related issues, or issues with the code not fully portable?

If the former, it may be worth just compiling natively (I personally avoid cross-compilers if possible, and the BBB is speedy enough to get code compiled in reasonable times). If you're short of space on the BBB for the compile, then an NFS mount is an option as you probably know.

    Hey shabaz,

My first guess is that they're cross compiler issues.

I'm attempting to compile the Maximilian example code which does support linux, though I'm not entirely sure it if supports ARM linux as I haven't tried this - I guess this is the next thing I should try. The cross compiler I am using is this one, which I have got working with a basic program, but not with the Maximilian examples which requires OSS or ALSA. I've used the guide on the previous link to cross-compile the ALSA library too, however when trying to compile the code linked to ALSA the ALSA lib file complains it needs other libraries that aren't install, which is where I've got to so far.

My main reason for using a cross-compiler is that is allows me to develop on my OS X machine where I've got GUI text editors, but I guess I could just transfer the code onto the BBB for compiling, if I can get the BBB to compile Maximilian.

    Hi Liam,

Yeah much better chance of success with the direct build, I tried Csound a couple of months ago, and went for the native compile for that too

(I wanted the latest, so didn't use a pre-built version which was an earlier release).
