What's been your major hurdles, hangups or problems?

Everyone gets to that point where they feel they've hit a brick wall, there's something they perhaps just don't know, perhaps the hardware hasn't arrived, they've ran out of solder or there's something else going amiss.

 

For me in my projects lately I need access to a 3D Printer, but the one at my local hackspace isn't working!

 

So what's stopped you from progressing with your musictech project? Either now or previously?

  • My major hurdle has been that a fire broke out in my home office, and although it was extinguished fairly quickly, and the actual fire damage was relatively minor, everything on and around my desk got covered in soot and water including my hexynth module prototypes. I packed my 3D printer and electronics gear away into storage while the office was being cleaned up and repaired, but I finally set up my soldering iron and 3D printer again yesterday, and I it looks like I'll be able to clean up & salvage my prototypes, so hopefully I'll be back on track soon!

     

    The other hurdle has been that my challenger kit never arrived :/

  • Part of my kit never arrived as well, I suspect it is been returned to farnell UK, but it's a real struggle to communicate with those guys and xplain my problem... They actually don't know nothing about the challenge and whenever they say they'll check for the package they never get back to me

  • Well, I caught a huge cold which put me in bed for a couple of weeks, which I am still recovering from, so I'm very low on energy currently and it's making things slightly difficult as I feel I have a lot of work to do in a short amount of time... I'm rapidly getting better, though, so I have hope I will at least finish up a prototype before the end of the challenge!

     

    That my challenger kit hasn't arrived yet is another demoralizing factor which I feel is limiting my progress quite a lot. I only have access to the SoftLab on Wednesdays and Sundays, which is where I do most of the suit, so most of the other time which I would have spent on the other aspect of the construction has been extremely slowed down because of this...

  • The main problems I've had whilst undertaking this project:

    • Loosing a couple of weeks trying to figure out why I was getting frequent audio glitches and artefacts within my synth engine on the BBB. After trying everything to optimise the audio code, thinking that's what the problem was, it's turns out it was related to sending data to the MIDI-out serial port; the audio optimising idea was just a really annoying red herring.
    • Hitting a brick wall when developing the panel circuitry and finding that some of the potentiometers just wouldn't work, even if replaced. Talking to my superiors at work helped me solve this one.
    • My BBB stopped working. Luckily Element14 were quick at sorting this out for me though.
    • Getting ill and run-down a couple of times from spending most of my free time on the project, causing me to force myself to step back from it for a few days here and there.

  • Although my name isn't listed above but being one of the fifteen challengers chosen to be provided a kit was the most exciting part until I realised the kit didn't make it's way to my doorstep. Although the guys handling the shipping have dug in and assured me of kit being dispatched to me, it's still a puzzle if I would really be able to get my hands on to it. Well, we will know for sure within a couple of weeks I guess. It's as if the ice cream melted soon before you try to take a bite. There has been some issue with the customs preventing the kit to make it's way through( that's what I have been told), now about all I can do I just to see what transpires.

    That's no fun, is it? When you see a contest enroll and you're not able to participate?

     

    I hope that the parts will appear on your doorstep, that you will build something creative with it, and that you'll blog about it on our forum here.

     

    and that you'll enjoy the kit when it arrives!

  • Some of the public libraries around here have 3D printers available for use by the public. Our libraries had been supplying photocopying and paper printing services for a long time, so this was not that big a stretch in mandate. Maybe you can petition for a similar program in your area.

    As far as my problems, I could write a book - this last year was particularly disastrous, but I strive to find more fun things to write about.

  • Right now it's a dodgy landlord who's sold the house giving us no notice.

     

    Hardware-wise the most common I have is using laser-cutters that don't behave like they should.

     

    Another one I have very often is that I need a bit of code that I don't understand and have to ask for help.

     

    The good thing is that there's something to be learned from these situations..

    I'm glad you weren't hurt or injured in the fire (I hope no one was, that sounds awful!)
