Install an Ubuntu Virtual Machine

I installed the Vivado tools in Windows when I went through other tutorials in preparation for the training. However, Ubuntu is used in training given the use of PetaLinux. I found the latest PetaLinux Tools Documentation Reference Guide UG1144 (v2019.1) May 22, 2019 which states that Ubuntu Linux 16.04.5, 18.04.1 (64-bit) is the current supported Ubuntu version. I found the version of Ubuntu here: Index of /releases

I wonder if WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux) would do the trick? I'm planning to try that soon.

Yeah, I agree, it's probably better to stick to the format of the tutorials. Easier to see where something went wrong than doing it a different way. Good to know that's a possibility, though! I have successfully…

I doubt it works. WSL is not a true Linux. Probably first issue would be how to get USB-to-JTAG/UART Pod work on WSL.

Are you sure that the Xilinx tools replace cmd? I've installed them and I'm pretty sure they don't. It would be a very strange thing to do too. (I must admit I haven't done anything Petalinux specific though.)

The petalinux tools will be needed to get through the builds and installs, so I found you will have to have a linux environment for that.  I haven't looked into a workaround.

The installation of the Xilinx tools on windows also replaces the "cmd" command utility.  This isn't a big deal (use the Windows TShell utility instead), but I have heartburn over Xilinx replacing a windows component.

I have successfully copied other files into the VM shared folder and onto the desktop. It seems like the size of the SDx .tar.gz file might be causing an issue for me.

I haven't been able to install the Xilinx tools yet. I spent most of yesterday going through several of the videos. However, installing VM and Ubuntu took about 2 hours. I was having issues installing Ubuntu in VM as per the instructions. One of the weird things was the screen during the Ubuntu install was acting weird and wouldn't expand. I had to change the Display to VboxSGA and expand the window as soon as the install started to get it to work.

I have never gotten Linux FPGA tools to act "right" compared to Windows. However, I am hoping I am wrong this time. I am going to attempt the Xilinx tools install in in Linux today. I did research FPGA and Software design in Windows and Petalinux coding and compile in Linux then merging both. It is doable but would rather stick to the format of the tutorials and labs.
