The position and motion sensors information from the SenseHATSenseHAT on the Raspberry PI3Raspberry PI3 together with the RGB 8x8 display are  the perfect tool to make the controller interactive interface for IoT project.

Making the device easy to control by any kind of user the hardware needs a case. The form design and the impacting bright yellow colour harmonise with the site where the installation will be set in place; it is also an easily identifiable object by visually-impaired users.

The following images shows the rendered design of the case hosting the PI3 and SenseHAT

The design has been split in two halves to include the hardware elements as shown below:

Top and bottom parts will be fixed with 4 Parker screws. Based on the first tests the internal air circulation should be sufficient for Raspberry PI3 cooling.

3d printing and assemblilng

The 3D printing operation requires about 5 hrs total with a 0.4mm nozzle and a layer thickness of 0.2mm The case will not be stressed mechanically so it is sufficient setting the internal fill to 25% with a 0.6 thickness to the sides. As shown in the above image most of the time required depends on the need of a full internal support of the empty spaces.

The above image shows the "kit" components ready for assembling; note the the open window for the SenseHAT LCD will be sealed with a 2mm opaline acrylic frame: this generates a nice effect for the display readability. The internal hardware does not need to be fixed with screws but a 5mm antistatic foam bed is sufficient, pressing the internal assembly when the screws are closed.

    Well, next step is to find somewhere the M2/3/4 measures in inches and mm then see how this stuff can be purchased through amazon. The problem I have here is the Amazon does not ship in the Netherlands, so I should find exactly what these parts are needed then find somewhere else to order online.

     

    But this sounds as a good starting point

    Ahhh great idea with the hot air gun, I didn't think of trying that!

    You've found a nice search result there, all sorts of things to try : ) I too don't understand the imperial measurements very much ; )

    For a while I've been meaning to get a small 'arbor press', which could be useful for pushing in such inserts, although overkill for plastic since the hot

    air or soldering iron methods work.

    Mainly I wanted the press for pushing in the brass or steel stand-offs into PCBs (they are cheaper and more practical than using separate nuts/bolts or hex

    spacers for that purpose) and into aluminium enclosures.

    Shabaz, just tried as last resource and just found.

    On this link on amazon searching for threaded inserts there are 400 pages ! I come crazy to know the sizes as most of them are expressed in decimal inches instead of M1, M2, M3 etc. But I bet we can find almost what we are searching for.

     

    BTW about the plastic insertion I have tried with the hot hair SMD iron station and after a couple of tests for every kind of plastic you find the right temperature without damagin the finished part.
