Blog 7: Update On Enclosure

Hello again, in continuation with the project blogs, this blog is to update about the almost final enclosure for the musical picasso project. I used MDF board to make the sides of the enclosure along with a black vinyl to give a decent look.

The major issue was to assemble all the electronics inside the box area, including the power and control board for driving the LCD, raspberry pi and the Pi camera, a relay board for light control and audio amplifier to drive the 1.5watt speakers. All the components were placed inside the box however the box thickness is about 10cm I am looking forward to maybe reducing it to about 6-8cm since I do have some space between the LCD screen and the remaining electronics. For now however this looks fine and decently presentable. So the next step would be to port all the software application to the raspberry pi and configure the picam along with the audio files.

The images show the box in a nut shell, observe I used a bessel along with 2cm walls so as to mount the top portion with the bottom and screw them to hold together. When required I can easily unscrew these to take a look at the internal electronics.

Initially I was planning to make the enclosure using plywood board of half inch thickness but the MDF seemed to be a great alternative for this and it all did turned out well. So I also made a lot of changes such as earlier I was planning to give buttons for user on the side of the screen however now I am planning to give an IR remote control. Also the bessel is a bit more than expected but the overall look is not that bad.

Currently I just wanted to hook everything together in order to get it running and see the overall functionality and make incremental changes in the software and enclosure if required.

 

Next step would be to finally test everything along with the PyQt based application that is made and the image capture and processing for slideshow. Though I have tested the features of application on an ubuntu machine but compiling everything on the Pi board and getting the first feel of the musical picasso would be a great milestone in itself. Further enhancements such as the lights control and IR based control are to be followed.
