Engineering Food - Pi Chef Design Challenge

Food. It is what we eat. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack, meal, whatever you name it, food is a very important factor in our daily routine.

Humans are a particularly interesting species when it comes our diets.  From the first hunter, and fisher, and farmer, the evolution of our species has been driven by the pursuit of the things we eat and drink. Walking to the refrigerator for a cold beverage and snack, or taking the family and friends out for lunch or dinner, we are satisfying our bodies with the stuff we require to function.

A large portion of the development of our technology has been devoted to the production of food and beverage. Cooking food with fire, learning to process grains, developments in nutrition and refrigeration, advancements made pasteurization, agriculture, packaging and other food sciences are one of the key features that define us as a species.

Advancements made in these technologies and sciences of food production come from engineers, scientists, and doctors.  It comes from the baker and the butcher, the farmer and the fisherman (or woman). Food comes from the vending machine, the cafe or restaurant, and the grocery or convenience store. Made at home or ordered out, it is all for the love of food.

Below I have provided some photos of important temperature conversions and other related info that I hope you will find useful in the Pi Chef Design Challenge.

The information in these photos was captured from a reference book called " The Food Lover's Companion"  ISBN 0-7641-1258-9. This book was given to me as a gift many years ago.

Congratulations to the selected applicants of the Element 14 Pi Chef Design Challenge.

Good luck to everyone!

Thanks for visiting this post. I hope that you will find this information useful in your Pi Chef Project Design.

Great information. Looks like the data needed for the development of the ultimate cooking calculator.

I am currently searching for a resource to determine the current barometric pressure at sea level for a given location Airports are required to provide the barometric pressure. This should be available…

This is awesome... even including adjustments for altitude. Thinking of printing some of this out for sticking on the 'fridge!

It is interesting that you mention this.

I am currently searching for a resource to determine the current barometric pressure at sea level for a given location in order to calibrate an altimeter.

I am currently searching for a resource to determine the current barometric pressure at sea level for a given location

Airports are required to provide the barometric pressure.

This should be available by scraping the information that is published and available to the general flying public.

I'm sure if you start tracking down ATIS reports, you'll find them.

    Hey Mark,

This is a great suggestion. Thank you.

    I have not considered this.

There's an public airport very close to were I'm located.

There are many military bases and airfields close by as well but it is doubtful that these options would provide this information.

    Thanks again Mark.
