Pi Chef Design Challenge :- Smart Food Scale #1 - Introduction

This will be a portable and an interactive food scale. A smart internet connected food scale that talks to your mobile phone. Ideal for home kitchen use. Sensitive enough to weigh herbs and spices. It will also have a wide range, so you can weigh heavy things like flour and rice. It will enable people to weigh ingredients and snacks and then determine the exact amount of fat, proteins, carbohydrates and calories in the ingredients they’re using in recipes or the snacks they’re eating at home.

The device will act as a scale, displaying the weight of any objects placed on it on the display. Weight can be measured in grams, ounces or pounds. Recipes will be stored in the SD card and displayed on the touch display. Step by step instructions will be provided for cooking a recipe.

Gesture sensor will be added for browsing the recipes hands-free. So, you can browse the recipe hands-free while baking, cooking, and cutting.

It will help anyone make beautiful and delicious food, regardless of experience. The device will also act as a cooking timer (e.g. for baking purposes) so you won't burn your food again!image

The platform would be a great tool for diabetics who need to control their sugar intake and athletes/pregnant women who need to ensure that they're getting the right balance of nutrition.

Goals for this project:

  • Kitchen scales that have a recipe on screen, it monitors your quantities and guides you through the cooking process.
  • A more automated way to track calories/nutrition.
  • Interactive cook book.
  • A cooking/baking timer too. image
  • Recipe re-scaling if some of the ingredient is not enough.

Components to be used:-

  • Raspberry Pi 3 Model B {Brain of the Device which will control and monitor everything}
  • 32GB Raspberry Pi NOOBS Operating System Micro-SD Card {Memory of the Device where the recipes and the code will be stored}
  • 2.4" Touch Screen Hat {For displaying the recipes and other details}
  • Load Cell 5Kg {Sensor using which we will be able to weigh something}
  • APDS-9960APDS-9960Sensor{For touch-less gesture sensing
  • HX711 module {A precision 24-bit analog to digital converter (ADC)}

    Cant wait to see it in action!

    i have had daydreams of this type of device, or at least one that could identify raw ingredients you weigh and suggest a recipe based upon it; I realise you are approaching this from a different angle, but its certainly up the same street!

    I started a Flickr group called 'I Ate This' in which members photograph & upload images of their meals, in that brief moment of personal triumph between cooking success and appetite satisfaction!

    The group grew so fast that i started to envisage its use as a database for recipes and to that goal i asked members who had the time and enthusiasm to start adding at least the ingredients (to be used as Keywords) and hopefully a recipe to go with their image.  The group, as with most organic projects(!) ,has now grown to a very useful size but way beyond my control...

    However i still keep it in my backburner of projects so am very keen to see where this takes you & I shall certainly be trying out.

    Good Luck!

    Hi disaleamol ,

    A clear and crisp yet descriptive update. Well done in that regards.

    • A more automated way to track calories/nutrition.

    I’m excited to see how the above feature is implemented. Because I have to enter manually how much calories I take in, in health apps.

    Are you going to link the weight measured in your scale to calories? If yes, hope you have checked this wonderful collection from ninjatrent
