Cybernetic Computer Interface - Almost done

Hello all

This is probably the last post I write before the end of "Sci Fi Your Pi" challenge and I want to take this occasion to thank Element14, sponsors and everyone involved in launching and managing this challenge and also for the opportunity to be part of it.

Although I did not manage to take this this project where I wanted, in this post I'll show you the current status of Cybernetic Computer Interface project.

For those of you not knowing what Cybernetic Computer Interface project is, please check the previous posts from here:

- Cybernetic Computer Interface

- Cybernetic Computer Interface - First step

- Cybernetic Computer Interface - Audio interface settings

- Cybernetic Computer Interface - Hardware description and functional demo

In the last post, you could see and hear Cybernetic Computer Interface in action operating inside a box. But Cybernetic Computer Interface is supposed to be a wearable device so let's make it so.

At this stage of construction, initial ideas about how mechanical structure should be made proved wrong and involved a lot of back and forth testing and redesign.

Because of the weight, in the end I had to add additional structural elements to make the device wearable.

One of the biggest problems was to put everything on the quite small frame.

The frame is built from aluminium strip, which is also light, flexible, strong and easy to work with. I need it to be flexible to allow the whole structure to

squeeze against the head and sit as tight as possible.

image

All boards are mounted on this frame with zip ties and wires in order to allow them to move without create mechanical tension in the boards, to avoid crack them.

The hardest point was to make the moving arm for Control and Display module. This should be mounted on the frame, must be extensible to allow an easy reading of display

and needs to be strong enough to not bend or break under the weight of CAD module (ask me how I know image ).

The actual version of the arm is made from a hacked selfie stick image

image

Also all power and control lines from RPi to CAD had to be long and flexible enough to allow mechanical parts to move. After trying MANY types of cables,

I end up using cables recovered from dead computer mice, which proved the best choice so far.

On the right side of CCI, I added two small voltage indicators, one for each LiPo cell. These have their own switch in order to be checked alone from the rest of the system.

Since the last post, the software was also improved with SDcard and USB drive support but voice recognition support is still not present.

Because of the large (and unforseen ) quantity of time involved in mechanical side development and building, I did not manage to build the outer shell and mount everything as I hoped for the final presentation, so this is the current state. Working but not finished.

I hope I will finish to build the outer shell in the next weeks and show you the completed device.

Here you can see different views of the device and a short demo movie.

In the next weeks I'll build the outer shell and post here the final version with all planned features.

Thank you all for following Cybernetic Computer Interface building thread and I hope you found an interesting and informative journey.

All the best

    Thank you Seba,

I missed the design as they were attached instead of embedded as expected. Now I saw the post on the PC and the images are sown.

    Hi Enrico

I was saying about the post with project description - this one. Basically there are a couple of original Borg Construct Aj^6 device pictures and some sketches I draw.

I plan to build the outer shell (or covers) from a thin plastic material, cut and bent to match the frame and internal components.

    Hi Seba,

I checked from the link to your project on the challenger list but in the historical post list I have not found any design of it should be. Take a look by yourself : http://www.element14.com/community/community/design-challenges/sci-fi-your-pi/blog/authors/sebathorus?ICID=DCH-SciFiPi-challengers

    Hi

For an idea about the outer shell you can look at the pictures from the very first post with project description.

      Thanks

    Thank you

The display arm and its positioning were one of the most difficult part of the mechanical side.
