Learning Single Board Computers

Former Member
Former Member over 11 years ago

Hello people of the element 14 community! My name is Nehemiah and I am 14 years old. Over the past two years I have been learning electronics such as arduino and a little bit of raspberry pi. I have made a few projects with my arduino (one being my science fair project) and want to do more advanced things. I watch this video by Ben Heck (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXllm5JWWAs&list=UUhturLXwYxwTOf_5krs0qvA) and wanted to do something similar to that. Could anyone give me a link to the explanation of single board computers and projects like that? That would be so helpful!

Thanks in advance,

Nehemiah

If you want to try an ambitious retro build, the AIM 65 was a cool single board computer: The schematics are posted here: Rockwell AIM-65 and 6502 related devices Index of /aim65

Hey, have a look at Ben's latest project.  He's building an Apple 1 over 3 episodes.

Do you know if he has a schematic for what he is building or is he just looking at schematics online?

    Thanks,

    Nehemiah

I also am getting these parts for Christmas from my parents. I may be able to make two SBC's with two different processors!

    Thanks!

I couldn't see any additional material, BUT the final episode has yet to show and I'm new to the site.  So maybe it's hiding somewhere here or it has yet to be posted.

I think he alludes to some in the show ... The CPU board he has done so far is stupid simple anyway!

When we were looking at programmers/erasers etc etc don't consider them in the price of this one build. Please think of them as a piece of equipment like a soldering Iron or meter or scope. They will last as long you could be building things using this kit in 20 years no problem.  My point is that if you or your parents can drop the extra few bucks on them it will make a big difference to succeeding  in the project. If you succeed then you will want to learn more and so on....Good luck

I haven't used an Eprom programmer for years and years - so I just dug it out for old times sake

    ................................

Found it but the batteries are dead - I'll see if the NiCad (yes it's that old) will come back to life but I'll need to solder in a new coin cell (it's soldered directly to the board).

If I get it working I'll post about it.

I only ever really used it on one job - then micros with built in flash came along.

It depends what you want to do - some projects require EEPROMs a lot more than others.

might make more of a post on how you cleaned the battery chemistry off the PCB of the programmer.

Quite likely if it's that old... should be fun

No leaks - but no charge retention. It's a Dataman S4 programmer and it has  a crackpot scheme where it can't start if the battery is completely flat. I connected it to a power supply, current limited to 150mA and the voltage rose to 9.4V (the limit I set almost immediately and the charge current after a few minutes was down to 6mA. I'm waiting to see what happens next but I'm expecting to need a new battery - £23 from Dataman or I can buy cells. Actually it seems you get ripped off buying cells in singles with tags so the cheapest option is to buy an 8 cell pack from CPC and chop one cell off (BT05358 @£21.91). (Farnell might have something but the web site won't respond).

So that's £23.48 this thread has cost me so far image
