Hello Everybody,

So I have still not received any kits or seeds because there are problems in the Bulgarian Customers. To receive the seeds I need a "PHYTOSANITARY CERTIFICATE" from the sender. Otherwise I started the job with programming the platform that will ensure to drive all the sensors and systems. Also the stand of the vertical farm is almost done. For the stand I use EU pallet that modify a little bit. I will upload more pictures soon.

The KIT is OK. I managed to release it from the customers, but I paid 20 % VAT and another 7% Taxes. The seeds came in different package from Jonny's Selected Seeds. I can't release the package due to…

Good luck in getting what you need Ognyan.:)

I don't understand why they would need a "PHYTOSANITARY CERTIFICATE" for the electronics kit. The seeds I understand. I would check with element14Dave on that.

The KIT is OK. I managed to release it from the customers, but I paid 20 % VAT  and another 7% Taxes. The seeds came in different package from Jonny's Selected Seeds. I can't release the package due to European Laws. And Bulgaria is part of European Union and follow European laws. Every package that is "special" (contains some goods, seeds, plants and etc.) have to certified. I contact Jonny's Selected Seeds and they are able to give me phytosanitary certificate but at a price of 125$. So I think to refuse this package and manage to take my own seeds that are sold in Bulgarian Markets. Tonight I will upload pictures of frame made from old EU pallet. I'm not so good carpenter so don't expect a beautiful wooden frame image

Great Ognyan! At least you have the kit in hand. image

I would think E14 could make arrangements for you to use some similar, locally obtainable, seeds in order to work around the customs issue. The seeds we were provided are Johnny's Selected Seeds Adriana Lettuce Seeds.

In case you haven't seen it already. Here's the latest post from  element14Dave concerning the seed kits.

    http://www.element14.com/community/community/design-challenges/vertical-farming/blog/2015/08/22/vertical-farming-check-in-pt-2-seeds-kits-and-more

And here's is a link to the seed page.

    http://www.johnnyseeds.com/p-6486-adriana.aspx

Maybe some of this will help you get this issue resolved in a timely fashion so you can get caught up on the challenge. You still have about 30 days before planting begins. image

    Cheers,

    Rick

Thank you for the information that you provided. I already check the type of the seeds and I can obtain them here locally in Bulgaria. The problem for the package is not the sort of the seeds, but the documents needed to be released from National Customs. In the next few days I will refuse the package, otherwise I have to pay penalty for not release the package. So I am in very difficult situation, but don't worry I will find a solution.

I saw some posts of people that have installed light. But the bulbs are not LED. Are they using the heat that they radiate to heat the seeds? Or they just need more light. If they we don't use the heat I will try to install LED strip that is low enery. I'm not sure that I will be able to power it from the solar panels, but I can give a try.

    Thank you.

Great, I would think that E14 will allow a similar seed to be used in a case like this.

I think the lighting you're seeing is fluorescent bulbs. And I believe they are being used only for germination. Most will use some sort of alternate supplemental lighting as well. Most prevalent is LED because of the low energy/heat and spectral profile they provide. You can also use metal halide or high-pressure sodium HID types or one of several plasma types. But these tend to be very inefficient and it's not as easy to control the spectral content using them.
