Wow! So excited! (project ambient_growth)

First of all, I want to say thank you very much to the selection team.  I very much appreciate being given the opportunity to participate in this design challenge, and to rub shoulders with some other awesome individuals as we individually and collectively work on developing our solutions.

I had talked to my 12 year old daughter about doing this design challenge as a fun project for us to do, and possibly a science fair project for her.  She's very much a geek (huge Dr. Who fan, jailbroke her iPhone, has started learning some programming languages).  As for me, I'm getting older now, and can actually have some extra time to tinker with things that interest me.  Vertical Farming happens to be one of them.  This is going to be an interesting project challenge, because we're challenged to develop a growth system that is efficient in multiple vectors of efficiency (physical space consumption, energy consumption, water efficiency).

I am going to attempt to build a growing platform that I can try out a couple of different growing enhancements at the same time, so that some quantitative data can be gathered and reported.

While I'm waiting for the kit to get here, I'll be working on writing the database schema and API (I'll be using python with Django for the RESTFUL API) so that the logging and everything will be ready to go by the time the kit arrives at my doorstep.  I'll be posting my source code and database schema design on github.  I'm a strong believer in open source, so if anyone finds it useful, by all means, feel free to use/modify as you wish.

Best of luck to the other challengers!

Sounds very good for first step. I was thinking to start doing my web platform that will include similar steps, this will be the easiest part of the project for me. The most difficult will be making all…

    Hi Ognyan,

It seems that you and I have similar backgrounds.  The software aspects of the project will be by far the easiest to complete.  Its been a while since I've done any significant hardware design work, but I was pretty "in to it" when I was a kid.  My hope is that I ~NOT~ blue smoke the expensive silicon labs embedded systems.  More than likely I'm going to prototype anything that I plan on plugging into the silicon labs boards into my arduino first and debug everything on that first.  I think my second ex-wife threw out the majority of my electronics components, so I'm planning on building a logic probe and some other basic gear to get prepped for the arrival of the "box o stuff."

    Best of luck to you.

    -Dan
