2019 has been a busy and interesting year for Design Challenges, and we've had some wonderful, weird, challenging projects. 2019 hosted the PiCasso Design Challenge with Raspberry Pi, which has been our most successful challenge to date, so it's only natural to highlight my top Challenger and Project of 2019, both of which came from the PiCasso Design Challenge!

My Top Challenger of the year goes to Enrico balearicdynamics

image

Enrico was the winner of the PiCasso Design Challenge for his entry Art-A-Tronic, an interactive art exhibit in Gent, Belgium. We have had some unbelievable projects submitted in Design Challenges of the years, but no one has ever submitted an entire interactive exhibition.

Enrico completed "seven of his nine goals": an augmented mannequin that can host Raspberry Pi Computer vision, has binaural hearing which turns to face you, and an MQTT connection to the "BORG Communication Nexus," an aptly named Cube featuring an MQTT Server. Aside from the articulating mannequin, the Communication Cube talks with a Raspberry Pi Smart Mirror and a cage full of Arduino controlled Bird Automata.

Project of the year goes to Wesley  gam3t3ch

image

Ever been so hungry that you wanted a GIANT Raspberry Pi? A giant ... working Raspberry Pi 3 B+!?  Then gam3t3ch has you covered!  This project impressed us so much that we created an Honorable Mention prize for the PiCasso challenge. The massive Raspberry Pi is a testament to Wesley's machining skills, knowledge of electronics, 3D printing, CNC, and general finishing.  He even went so far to connect the pins on the Pi Massive to an actual Raspberry Pi hidden within it.

"Weighing in at 13.9lbs, with 1,041,084mm of filament, a grand total of 440hrs of 3d printing and CNC work, and a massive amount of painting time and cleanup: the PiMassive is alive"

Wesley's Wrap up Blog and Video

Congratulations to these wonderful challengers ... and now you can all sink your teeth into the new Connected Cloud Challenge which has just gone live!

Happy New Year

Phil

Hey, e14phil thank thank thank you for the nomination. It has been an honor to represent the show in Gent that definitely lasted five (five!) months in three different locations and I am proud that all…

Hey, e14phil thank thank thank you for the nomination. It has been an honor to represent the show in Gent that definitely lasted five (five!) months in three different locations and I am proud that all of this born from E14 that definitely has been the main sponsor of the project together with other technical sponsors that helped very much the creation of all the operas with their support.

Sorry for my delay in answering to your post but I had a very bad start of the year, super busy, a house moving (always in Gent, better but a very stressful job), together with the rush to close the two books and by the mid of past December a painful injuries that finally is on the way to be definitely solved.

So, just to make a new year state of the art just what I have done (the positive things, hopefully).

    The Grand Prize image

I won one of the best things ever, the Mavic 2 Pro DJI drone. As a long time photographer and videomaker, I started studying the technology and potentiality of this incredible device, as well as studying the laws and the limits and possibilities. The videos below show some of the first decent results I got with the Drone:

More clips are available on my Pond5 portfolio.

Still about the drone, past 29 and 30 January I had been at the BAFA (Belgian Aerial Fly Academy) in the Antwerp airport for the theory of fly, meteorology, electronics, physics and laws for the UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles); I will get the drone pilot license in March, after two practice days and an exam. Below, a shot during the lessons.

    The Books

Another (hard) job that took me out of the scene for a long period – will be finished by the end of the month – has been writing two books for makers in the Italian language for the Editor Hulrico Hoepli, in Milan. Below the two covers:

    imageimage

The Arduino Book and the Raspberry Pi Book are already on pre-sale on Amazon. I am in a rush these last days as I should finish the second one and it should go in print very soon. Making these two works has been another great challenge as they are not just a collection of projects but I tried to involve the reader to be part of the makers' community as well as how to participate. Element 14 and Hackster.io are the two most important lighthouses I consider to be mentioned to any maker, newbie or advanced. I have tried to create a crescendo of topics and projects, from the essentials for maker lab up to complex projects involving electronics, design, 3D printing and more. I had also the opportunity to present to the reader the makers' world under many different points of view thanks to the number of great contributors that accepted to participate to this editorial project explaining their point of view and the meaning of the challenges, road tests, being part of a maker lab, creating a maker community and more, thanks to those that are both friends and a reference point by years: e14phil, rscasny, tariq.ahmad, Monica Huston (founder of Hackster.io), Rob Zwetslook (editor of the MagPi magazine) and many others.
