Alternative Applications for Qi

I conducted a test of the Texas Instruments Transmitter Manager bq500210EVM-689bq500210EVM-689 and Receiver Evaluation Module bq51013AEVM-765bq51013AEVM-765 to check its viability of transmitting power through a Glass door.

 

This unedited video has little dialogue but it shows an MSP430 LaunchPadMSP430 LaunchPad being powered through a Glass Door.

Evidence of successful operation is demonstrated by the faint connection beep and the blinking LEDs on the MSP430 Launchpad.

I am really pleased with the result and now in a position do not have to drill any holes to;

  • power external and outdoor devices such as Christmas or Garden lights from inside
  • or use Outdoor Solar Panels to power and charge indoor devices.

 

Very useful. Very Very useful.

    Hi all,

     

    actually this is the right time to share my experience....with my brother. He is a carpenter, specialized on furnitures.

    So he doesn't have any clue about electronics, for sure he doesn't know what wireless power charging is.

    I love my brother, but i am sure, he would try to find the cable for WLAN if i would ask him to get one.

     

    But back to the topic, i told him about the WPC solutions and integrating a Qi-compatible charger into the desk or sideboard or all the other furnitures. And he did like the idea, even if he didn't understand what he needs from electronical point of view. I told him he'll get a black box with a cable coming out of it, which just needs to be plugged into the wall outlet. And now he can sell the furniture with an more added value.

    The end customer still only sees the wood from the top, but underneath is the coil which transmitts the power to the Rx side.

    Alignment could be done by a nice Qi-logo branded into the wood...or something similar.

     

    So, as we can see in Monte's video, all different materials can be put in between Tx and Rx side, as long as they are diamagnetic (µr equal to approx. 1). This could be any kind of plastic, wood, glas etc.

     

    I am looking forward to see more of your ideas you are coming up with. Wireless doesn't mean "transmission in air", it can be one of the above mentioned materials as well.

    What i need to try is transmitting the power between Tx and Rx having water in between. Maybe a water pump which is installed into a acquarium?!

    I like it.

     

    I have been looking for a way to set up a digital camera on the outside of my windows and use either an RF or IR link to trigger the camera for monitoring my birdfeeder and get closeup pictures of the birds feeding.

     

    I could use your approach without having to modify the window or move the bird feeder.

    I could also use this approach to power my lightning photography and thunder recorder without worrying about lightning induced power spikes.

    Hey Monte, great idea!

    A friend of mine already mentioned his idea to me to make a wireless LED lamp (5W is enough) to be easily replaceable.

    BTW, as an improvement to a Qi-2.0 standard: make it possible to send / receive information through the Qi power link!
