Radio frequency

30 Jul 2019

I have a moving vehicle which I need to communicate with.

Radio frequency has its limits with distance.

My question is if I take an aerostat ballon to 400m high

Place a antenna attached to a tracker  To always send the waves to the vehicle.

Will that work?

Also how do I  tranmit to the aerostat antenna from the ground control 400m down ?

Any ideas?

I don't believe that's practical in the way described over such distances to/from a moving vehicle with a whip antenna, using any known legal unlicensed spectrum. You can calculate it here, if you know…

You could use something like LoRa to relay GPS location and send directions, but you would need to find some other way of sending video. As Shabaz suggested an LTE cellular link is about the only solution…

    Hi Oliver,

Can you check TI-CC1120 based solution?

    VHF frequency

I am looking for a distance of 100km

I would like to transmit data video live streaming

    150kpbs

from HQ to vehicle sending directions

    Thanks for the info.

    Air space not a problem.

It would be bidirectional going from the base HQ to the aerostat thru a repeater or some sort of extender then to the vehicle some distance away.

The Aerostat is in a fixed position  400m  above the HQ.

Using antenna trackers to position and get the most frequency for a line of sight.

My question is instead of a repeater what can I use to communicate from HQ to the aerostat 400m above and still get maximum distance ?

    Hi Oliver,

It would be great if you can provide some more information about your application.

    1) How far can the moving body go from the antenna?

    2) What frequency spectrum are you talking about?

    3) What kind of data you want to transmit and what is the required data rate ? (This can effect the frequency band selection)

There are restrictions on certain frequency bands in most of the countries. So check that first.

    Regards,

    Aswin

    Hi Oliver,

There's not enough information to answer fully (e.g. amount of information, and rate, and it's unclear if your communication needs to be bidirectional, and between which two locations - is the balloon acting as some intermediary between the fixed location and the vehicle?).

At the frequencies you may be allowed to transmit at, you'll have an ugly whip antenna sticking out the vehicle for 70cm or so. There are lots of online balloon projects, but they usually transmit just telemetry in one direction, from balloon to fixed or vehicle. That may give you some ideas for further designing of your solution. Bear in mind, it's not possible to have a balloon launch on demand (depends on weather conditions, and location/airspace), so it would be a very restricted solution for ground to vehicle comms if that was the intention.

    1. My Goal in detail

(e.g. climb a mountain next year)

    2. What things I'm trying to solve

(e.g. establish how high I am)

    3. What constraints I have

(e.g. cost, software experience, hardware experience)
