The Benefits of Hoarding: One Practical Example.

Being an electronics parts hoarder has benefits, because if you need to quickly repair a thing or two, you have a great chance of already being in possession of the right replacement components.

My car key recently broke....It was slammed in a door and fell into pieces. Not only did the shell get shattered, but  a button on the pcb itself broke.
Luckily (as aparts hoarder) I had the exact matching buttons in stock (which are curiously the same as used on the RPI pico) and was able to replace them with relative ease.

I opted to do both buttons so they would match in actuation force and have the same life expectancy from now on.

Did you ever need to repair a thing and had the right parts already in your hoard?

Yes, on several occasions.  Most recently an USB connector on piece of test equipment broke off when an attached cable was accidentally stepped on.  The pins of the connector were broken off at the connector.  Looking through my stock of USB connectors (current 16 different models, including mini, micro and normal), I was able to find the exact replacement.

My wife thinks I am a hoarder.  I think that I am a well-stocked engineer that loves to design and build things.  To my defense, I supply a lot of products to my clients, and I want to have a high level of control over the products that I build. So, I have a detailed stocking list and order the same part numbers as long as they are available.  I do try to limit the number of parts that I include in my designs, through reusing large sections of these designs. Hoarding on inventory control?

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.  It’s not hoarding, it preserving useful components.  I’m not cheap, I’m thrifty.  And why buy a microswitch (or an expensive car key) when you can repair it yourself.
