Blowing up a Mod: The XBoxOne Tablet dies in India

I was lucky to win the Ben Heck Xbox One Tablet build and after some battering by UPS, it reached. There was some damage, to the Tablet- some external and some internal. Most of the damage was cosmetic. I unboxed it like a kid and plugged it in for some fun and in my zeal I made a terrible mistake. What was intended as a Unboxing video became a snuff film of sorts for the XBox. Take a look for yourself.

So what went wrong? The simple answer is 240Volts AC where there should have been 100V. The power supply that was used in the XBOX build was a US one and instantaneously, it blew up a MOV or Metal Oxide varaistor in addtion to a possible choke. I was instantaneously in shock and decided to take it apart. I think thats what I should have done in the first place though and found that the SMPS was indeed history. I can repair it BUT it would not be of much use since its still a 100 V version. My primary concern was to understand if there is any damage to the XBox itself.

(Note the charred MOV)

Without a power brick, I was forced to resort to... alternatives. I hooked up the XBoxOne to a power supply meant for PCs. I took care as to the voltages and it was a 500W power supply. I also disconnected the inbuilt display and hooked up a monitor to it.

Success! It works and I was able to see things turn on, boot and then go into a windows 8.1 type screen.  I was relieved that things work and the XBox is in good condition. I was not able to play anything because there was no controller in the box and element14Dave can comment on that. I used the power button to switch it off and it went out purring like a kitten.

I next proceeded to inspect the rest of the things. There were breakages across the 3d printed parts as well as the outer bessel.

One thing to note was that the speakers, sync button were disconnected when it arrived... I wonder why...

I also analysed the Monitor power supply and it seemed to work. It was 220V safe and it was a relief. It functioned correctly individually.

So it survived more or less.

I closed shop that day and ordered an XBox One Controller as well as a Power brick (chinese make- the original is 4 times the cost.)

Little did I know that the coming week had more problems in store for me... A storm is brewing....

Till the next time..

Keep your Game Consoles safe.

Ouch - you handled it well though! Glad it is getting there, would be a shame not to be able to have it in a functioning state again. Also, how is life with baby? Hope all is well!

shabaz sir. Yea there was really nothing I could do about UPS. They still have some stuff stuck in customs but spannerspencer is patiently dealing with them. For the Xbox One, yea its a shame and it seems…

That would get me kicked out of my own house first and send my mother into shock. I think I'll stick to the normal geeky stuff. image

You must have broken a mirro or something as your luck seems to have run out.

I was surprised that the power brick wasn't 100/230 and wouldn't have thought to look at it.

They are simply a rectifer and DC-DC converter ....

In NZ UPS hands everything off to other contractors, and I've seen the customs part of parcel handling where throwing packages into bins of other packages seems to be the norm.

Sadly some packages aren't packaged to be handled as roughly as they get treated, despite all the stickers and warnings.

blonde girls can sell more electronics stuff because they fit the profile the geeky kids like to watch

For the Xbox One, yea its a shame and it seems there is a new problem and the proposed solution is even more stupid than you would imagine...

My PC SMPS solution no longer works and I am completely baffled at whats going on. I shot a video explaining the problem and will upload the same on Monday from the office.(Bandwidth issues). I am beginning to think that this one will stay on the shelf. I did order a new power brick from ebay but do not have too many hopes of that working.

clem57 sir. Yes indded they hired the gorilla and their relatives to run UPS in India. Actually, in India UPS subcontracts a local courier company called first flight and they dont care about much of anything. The guy that came to deliver the box more or less 'dropped' it at my concrete doorstep. Welcome to India image

Me doing commercials is a good idea but statistically(google it) blonde girls can sell more electronics stuff because they fit the profile the geeky kids like to watch. Compare twitter followers of Dave Jones from the eevblog to any gamer girl on twitch. You will be surprised. I am still looking for my sweet spot in marketing. image

Wow! This reminds me of the Samsonite commercial. They take the luggage to a zoo and the luggage goes inside the gorilla cage. And what a beating where the gorilla jumps on it and throws it around?image I think since they do not make this commercial anymore, they must have sent the gorilla to India to handle electronic packages. Totally unfair. image

    Clem

PS I am glad you are better than average electronics guy! You should be a commercial over there. Bet you would get a lot of business. image
