I was lucky to win the Ben Heck Xbox One Tablet build and after some battering by UPS, it reached. There was some damage, to the Tablet- some external and some internal. Most of the damage was cosmetic. I unboxed it like a kid and plugged it in for some fun and in my zeal I made a terrible mistake. What was intended as a Unboxing video became a snuff film of sorts for the XBox. Take a look for yourself.
So what went wrong? The simple answer is 240Volts AC where there should have been 100V. The power supply that was used in the XBOX build was a US one and instantaneously, it blew up a MOV or Metal Oxide varaistor in addtion to a possible choke. I was instantaneously in shock and decided to take it apart. I think thats what I should have done in the first place though and found that the SMPS was indeed history. I can repair it BUT it would not be of much use since its still a 100 V version. My primary concern was to understand if there is any damage to the XBox itself.
(Note the charred MOV)
Without a power brick, I was forced to resort to... alternatives. I hooked up the XBoxOne to a power supply meant for PCs. I took care as to the voltages and it was a 500W power supply. I also disconnected the inbuilt display and hooked up a monitor to it.
Success! It works and I was able to see things turn on, boot and then go into a windows 8.1 type screen. I was relieved that things work and the XBox is in good condition. I was not able to play anything because there was no controller in the box and element14Dave can comment on that. I used the power button to switch it off and it went out purring like a kitten.
I next proceeded to inspect the rest of the things. There were breakages across the 3d printed parts as well as the outer bessel.
One thing to note was that the speakers, sync button were disconnected when it arrived... I wonder why...
I also analysed the Monitor power supply and it seemed to work. It was 220V safe and it was a relief. It functioned correctly individually.
So it survived more or less.
I closed shop that day and ordered an XBox One Controller as well as a Power brick (chinese make- the original is 4 times the cost.)
Little did I know that the coming week had more problems in store for me... A storm is brewing....
Till the next time..
Keep your Game Consoles safe.
