    Ben; I have two ideas, and they're more for the cool factor rather than practicality. 1. Use a solenoid with a plunger to catastrophically crush the can. 2. Use a vacuum system to suck the air from the…

    i would use large capacitor and large coil,>20kj Or more simple idea, 2kW induction heater, all you need to do is to place can inside ceramic holder with large coil around, and it will melt in few seconds…

    For simplicity sake, Use a weight hung below or above the can to be crushed, the can goes in a crushing sliding housing similar to the one in the video. Use a geared motor with a screw system to slowly lift the heavy weight. This would allow for a lower powered motor to lift the heavy weight. then when actuated the weight would drop being allowed to pick up momentum that would be used to crush the can. As the weight system is reset the crushed can would be ejected.

    I apologize for poor quality sketch.

    A turning screw shaft would go up the center of the weight and be spun by a motor. The weight would have rod guides to keep it sliding up and down. two solenoid actuated teeth would grab the screw shaft to lift it up and would be able to pull apart releasing the weight to slide down the guides and crush the can with momentum. The teeth would reengage and the motor would reset the weight.

     

    just a thought. I'm sure it would work but I don't know if it's the best way. I was leaning toward moderate size and low power consumption. What's the use of recycling if you have to waste tons of electricity running an air compressor for a pneumatic cylinder or the like. Potential energy for the win!

    It is certainly a great solution for using a low powered motor, but overall the can crushing rate is low and is limited by the power output of the motor (which is defined as energy per second (in this case we could even call it Work/seconds (as work is the change in energy(lets call it the amount of energy used to crush the can))(watts = joules/seconds). So while using a heavy weight can decrease the force required by the motor to crush the the can, it does not decrease the amount of work required to crush the can(work = force x displacement) because the displacement has been increased to compensate for a lower force. I love your outside the box thinking but effectively you have built a "force modifier device" such as a gearbox or lever.
