    I'd use this kit to learn linux, tinker around with the GPIO possibilities and, when I have enough knowledge to know what I'm doing, make a portable Raspberry Pi Linux computer !

    I Would use this in my main tv since my current Media center takes up a lot of space , I used a lot of scrap parts to put this "half a laptop" together

    I would use it to experiment with cluster computing with mixtures of processor architectures.

    I would create a raspberry pi umpc. I would make a slide out keyboard and install a touchscreen. It would be wifi and bluetooth capable. It would have built in speakers and a headphone jack, as well as ported out hdmi. It would also as the name implies be ultra mobile.

    My project would be to complete my automated Tilapia Aeroponics System. It is a  90 sq/ft shed that contains 2 300 gallon fish tanks, a 192 sq/ft greenhouse and it completely powered by a 1440 watt solar system in a residential area the middle of a large city.

     

    A major benefit is that I have created a close-loop system wherein the dirty fish water is used to water and fertilize the vegetables in my greenhouse. The vegetables remove the excess nitrites/nitrates from the water which is then returned back to the fish tank cleansed. 


    A Wi-Fi fob sends/receives video/data from the PI to a local web server which then serves a web page that runs on any browser or smart phone anywhere in the world.  The web server can send/receive HTML/text messages/emails to alert me of critical situations or major changes in conditions.


    I started with a PI+A from a friend and in only two weeks, I am able to stream live video (USB Camera), monitor water temperature and turn on/off two relays. I use the camera to monitor the the fish, visually check for leaks/flooding and check the status of an LED panel to confirm that certain activities are in working. (It is primitive for feedback, but it works for now). I was able to quickly connect 2 GPIO wires to an Arduino for additional processing, distributed monitoring, sensing, A/D conversion and additional GPIO pins.

     

    If I am selected, I will use my PI+B to add additional cameras for inside the fish tanks, automate feeding, monitor water levels, internal/external ambient temperature, PH and O2 levels, as well as control inside lights, heater, air conditioner and solar panel output. 

     

    This project fascinates me due to the current drought conditions in California. This is a closed loop system that uses less than 60 gallons of water/month for the fish and the water usage for growing all of the vegetables is roughly 3%-6% of standard agricultural practices.


    I achieved all of this using a Raspberry PI and a few sensors all on a quarter acre lot.  I am no mathematician, but I know that 3%-6% of water consumption is the type of water savings California could use right now.

    I would learn how to code computers (and maybe watch some stuff also). image I can't wait to get a Raspberry Pi and get started.

    I would really like to use it as a low-power/green hub for a smart home, being the gateway and primary decision maker when talking with smaller interactive units, such as Digistump Oaks andor some arduino-compatibles over the network. While this giveaway is media-centric, and it is certainly a common use for the Raspberry Pi, the case and memory card are essential for protecting and using the Pi, no matter what it is being used for. That said, it is also quite possible that it may perform smart-house duties in the background while acting as a media center. image
