A Ceiling Crane!

chrisdadragon
chrisdadragon over 9 years ago

My idea is to have a xy movement like a 3d printer/ cnc machine and for an z axis movement there is a crane with a grabber and maybe has a camra attached so that the user can see where the crane is. The user should be able to control it remotely ie from their bed or wheelchair via a computer. I am a person who has a dissabilty that limits my strength to only enough to use a mouse and keyboard i am unable to reach things far away but i believe that this idea could help me and others!

Interesting idea. How much weight are you thinking it can lift? DAB

If the XY axis were mounted to the ceiling, it seems that the device would have to be custom fit to whatever room it would be used in. What if instead, there was an actuated arm, more like an excavator arm. It could still have a grabber hand rather than a scooping bucket. Your reach would be a little more limited, but it would be easier to move the device from room to room.  To make it more versatile, a wheeled base could be added to make it mobile and RC. Thoughts?

Unfortunately ive been writing an detailed reply but my computer refreshed and i lost it. my reasoning for ceiling mount was its out of the way and would not need to be moved by anyone but the user via PC giving more them independence.

This sounds like you can use the Mega Claw that was shown at the 2010 NYC Maker Faire. I thought they had a "how to build" page that I read once, but I can't find it now. You'll be needing some powerful motors to lift something heavy (or even to move each axis). Maybe you can attach a small geared winch to the crane for lift. According to the creators this project cost them thousands to make. Sadly, Ben has a maximum of about $500 on each project and that is only in rare cases that he goes that high (ie: portable game systems).

A central ceiling mounted arm does sound more feasible. The GlaDOS Robotic Ceiling arm lamp comes to mind. Although I'm quite sure this would limit the maximum load it can hold and would be in the way for anyone walking through the room.
