Pimp out a PINBOX 3000

For $49.95 to CARDBOARD TECK INSTANTUTE gets you the "PINBOX 3000 CORE SYSTEM" a cardboard die-cut DIY tabletop pinball system.

Last year, Ben did the "Teensy Pinball Portable." which was amazing. I wonder if there might be any interest in a reboot on that project with the Pinball 3000 with the entry-level DIYer in mind. In other words, scaling down with maybe an off-the-shelf Arduino, shields, and prefab modules (ex. from Element14, Ada-Fruit, Sparkfun, TinkerKit, etc). The playfield would be simple and any bumper, target, etc. would be either cheap and widely available or designed in a way that those without 3D printers, laser cutter, etc could build.

Of course, it won't be as slick of a product as the "Teensy Pinball Portable" but more accessible to build for those who are just starting out in electronics and pinball design.

If just starting out then you may also find this electro pneumatic educational set of interest as it includes a pinball table as one of its designs.

    http://www.fischertechnik.de/en/desktopdefault.aspx/tabid-21/39_read-203/usetemplate-2_column_pano/

The set comes with the air compressor, valves, cylinders etc. for the pinball flippers. It is designed to work off-the-shelf with the Robotics TX or newer Robotics  TXT controllers but that could be replaced with the likes of an Arduino to reduce costs.

With it being building blocks then additional parts are easy to source and the design can be changed without the need for access to 3D printers/laser cutters. Also you can reuse the blocks for other designs.

If you look on YouTube then you will find all sorts of crazy stuff being built and programmed with this stuff. Of course if you have access to a 3D printer then it makes it easier to incorporate new blocks for 3rd party sensors and actuators. Also there is aluminium extrusion available which matches the profile of the bricks, so you can make some larger designs.

A couple of videos of enhanced pinball designs:
