Hello Ben,
I have a suggestion for your build... Can you build a soldering station? It'll have 80W or so, and it will have display to display you a heat setting and maybe bar graph for heating time countdown.
It'll be controlled with some kind of microcontroller like arduino or your AVR.
Thats my suggestion.
