DIY IR Tracker

Heey Ben,


I've already watched today's episode, and I look forward to next weeks episode to see what the XBOX One laptop will look like.

 

Because I've got x-mas holiday, I spend a little bit of my time in creating a DIY IR tracker to use it with simulation games on my pc.

 

I've gathered 2 IR leds from old remotes, and connected them to two AA battery's, but the IR's are not working.

Sometimes just 1 is working. Can you do a IR Tracker build on The Ben Heck show please?

 

I didn't use any resistors because I don't know which one i should use.

  • A possible reason one is not working is possibly because you blew it because you did not use a resistor, a IR transmitter is basically a IR Led and if you blow an led then that led's life is over. Again this is just one possibility, you said you pulled it out of a remote control, if your looking for the right amount of resistance then you should check the remote for one, it doesn't always have one but when it does the resistor will be in series with your IR LED. Hope this helps!

  • PS. Try re-connecting them back to the remotes and see if they still work, don't get the polarity wrong though! If your remotes don't go to a device test them by looking at the led through a camera, cameras can see IR, Good thing too, because we can't!

    Thanks! I've had that same feeling that the leds have been blown.

     

    Right now I replaced the IR leds with leds that are designed to run from 3 volts.

    The downside is that I can see them, but it doesn't irritate me image
