I think Ben should build a remote controlled crawler using the basics of electronics and at low cost
if this it made it will help me very much and even possibly give others ideas.

I would make a wireframe model. We need to isolate the degrees-of-freedom. The windshield wiper we see in front could possibly be crudely modelled upon a real number, say, between 0 and 1 for a single point in time. Most stuff a machine can do can be modelled this way*. A fn private to the renderer would intermediate its way to the display. The rub is that we will need an elasticity model on anything mechanically reactive, like suspension components in the bogey wheels, or stretchiness in the tracks.
I guess what I am trying to say is that, for such an ambitious project, I would try to run the software and hardware development in parallel. Skining the wireframe can probably come last.
