Current limitting power supply

I think it would be useful to have a power supply with variable voltage and current control for many projects. Also a readout of actual consumed current so you can tell if the limit is being used. It would allow the experimentation of circuits without as much risk of accidental over current. This would also be useful for charging batteries, but I would think additional circuitry would be needed to prevent overcharging.

  • I've got an HP bench power supply in a back-bedroom here that can output potential with current limiting, or current output with voltage limiting.  If I get time tomorrow, I will dig it out and post a snap.

  • I use a Thurlby PL310 which has both voltage and current limiting and produce up to 30V at 1A, with digital readouts. You set the voltage/current with the unit output switched off and then if you overload the output when switched on the display flashes. You are also able to set up a virtual earth (0V) to have dual based supply as well. If I remember rightly it cost me about £100 a few years back and has proved to good.
