The Dilbert Photo Frame

Hi,

first of all: great show, I love it!

The project idea I currently have in my mind: I've just moved to a new desk in the IT-company I'm working for. It's an open office space and a lot of colleagues putting up photos of their family etc. on these small acoustic walls which are seperating the desks. To put simply a picture, I found too boring. As I love Dilbert by Scott Adams (dilbert.com) I was thinking about creating something like a Dilbert-Photo-Frame, which is downloading the latest dilbert daily from the internet. As the URL of the latest Dilbert seems to be always in the format dilbert.com/strip/0215-03-17 this should work easy.

If done with a small display, a raspberry and a wlan connection, it wouldn't even need a network cable.

What do you think?

Beside that: thanks for the entertaining show which is very inspiring (and made me spend a fortune at the same time at element14... ;-)))

Greetings from Singapore.

No I didn't Have experienced my fair share of office politics (practical jokes) though I see they're using a camera and implementing a tactically silent observation system.

    Hi tjareson

    Sounds like a good project.

Is it something you would like to explore making?

Yes, I'm currently thinking about how to get it a bit more automated in the sense that the screen should not be switched on all the time, but only when someone is sitting at the desk.

Probably with a sensor which is either detecting distance of objects in front or movements. Ideally a passive sensor, as I don't want to be exposed to e.g. ultrasonic distance measuring all the time sitting at that desk. Not so sure yet...

A simple PIR might be just what you're looking for image

Yes, PIR would indeed be an option - not sure, how small they can be, as it should be somehow fit into a frame like enclosure.

That looks feasible already. Probably I would need to re-solder the tiny board at the sensor so that it's at a right angle to the sensor itself. Let's see. First I need to find a cheap, small display, but big enough to be able to read the dilbert... :-)

I've just been looking at e-paper displays. Would be ideal for your application, it could poll the Dilbert site periodically, and would retain the image while in low-power mode.

Unfortunately they seem to be rather costly. image

Are most of the daily Dilbert cartoons black and white?

No, in fact with color. But I think the PIR together with a small, shining TFT is quite good. It also creates some attention. I could e.g. put an on-vacation msg there, etc.
