Arrow Finder

Former Member
Former Member over 10 years ago

Hey, I was doing archery earlier and I shot an arrow into the woods by accident, This is not the first time I have done this. Would it be possibly to make some way to put a small insert into a carbon fiber arrow to make it trackable via radio, infrared, or even sound?

On a balanced arrow, center of gravity will be in the middle or the core. Outside would change the mass to one side. Clem

Hi Safeer, I am not sure there is a device as you describe with a power supply, and signaling means that would fit inside the shaft of an arrow without damaging the structural integrity of the arrow. The…

Yes I shoot Archery and yes I lost arrows (I use aluminum) but there is problems with putting a device inside the arrows called "Archers Paradox." When a arrows is released from the bow it flexes left and right. The more flexible the arrow and the weight of the pull of the bow the more flex the arrow has anything inside the arrow would either be broken by the flex or cause the arrow to shoot off the sighted path.

Now with that said you probably could add a led and a small battery (such as a cheap and small watch battery) at the end in the nock (using a clear or only tinted nock) and then just use a slightly heavier point. But you will need a nock that can be unscrewed instead of one that is glued on and with carbon fibers I don't think any are like that.

    Hi Bill,

I was hoping that someone with knowledge of the physics of archery would weigh in. I thought of another approach that would not involve structural modification of the arrow or electronics. If the arrows were dipped in a trackable scent we could just let Rover our trusty hound loose to go and fetch any arrows that have gone astray.

if going old school save your self time and a smell and during practice use a ribbon tied around the shaft and sits on the out side fletch area. I used this mod when I use to shoot 3D archery. During hunting I never loose arrows, just tips buried in a tree.

Target Practice then use the snell trick.
