Using a laptop optical drive slot to house a dedicated RasPi sub-processor

Hi Ben,

     I use my Raspberry Pi via my laptop quite frequently for software development and it is always awkward having to connect to it externally via serial or a crossover cable. I also have a CDROM that goes entirely unused. I was thinking it would be awesome to make a raspberry pi case that could fit inside that CDROM slot and be wired internally. Ultimately the perfect install would be one where the Enet ports of both the laptop and the RasPi are free and the RasPi I/O is still accessible. (possibly it could be pulled out in the same fashion as the CDROM?)

 

Thanks Ben I know it's possible, please show me the way!

    You would probably have to open the laptop up and rewire or even replace the connector to have the pi connect to your laptop in a usable way. Moving the ports and io is not to hard, but the risk!to your laptop is probably to!extreme for this to be worth attempting.

    Ventilation is an issue here as well. kidiccurus is right with the added ptoblem that laptops are alrady crammed to the gills will little room left over. Why not try a desktop as a better first attempt where more room exists learning much., and then later use the Pi compute module for small enclosure or laptop.

    And clem because the whole point is to basically have a hardware virtual machine always running and totally isolated

    Trying to point out this: experiment with a desktop to learn with goal for laptop. Climb the mount and not jump to peak. Just my experience learned with software mainly. EOS

    Sorry i meant to say that the portability was the whole point. And the main issue is that you would want to use SSH to connect yet keep the existing enet ports free on both devices
