Document (book) scanner

Can you improve on this idea of an open source booker scanner by incorporating Raspberry Pi for camera and hardware control (Ben areas) and programming document imaging, recognition, conversion (Felix strengths)? DIY Book Scanning

As far back as Feb 2013 this was suggested and with solutions such as Raspberry Pi it may be better suited as a build opportunity.

Would this be different than simply taking pictures of each page of a book? Would you want to be able to edit the pages? Would you want it to compile all the pages into a single .pdf document? Please tell me more about the usability and features you are imagining.
