I would love to have a small device that i could place discretely anywhere, say my car or my room that would upon entry give a greeting, similar to Xmen "Welcome professor"
But i would like it to have io so you can make it trigger stuff upon your entry and if possible remember when you entered so it knows when you are exiting and can say "goodbye".

I though maybe an ultrasound or Ir unit to detect entry? and one io port that you can add your own trigger for entry and exit.

This could do things like trigger lights in your room, turn on or off any power source when paired with a relay circuit.

And if you felt like going all out, add simple voice recognition to activate the extra io

1 : Oh well it would definitely need a programmable greeting that could be triggered by entry because of awesomeness! (include a pin to trigger it other ways in the future ) 2A: and if you want to do more…

    Hi Jared,

It sounds like a device like that could be really neat if it was as versatile as you described. Given the constrains of the show, we wouldn't have the time to build a product that could do some many things, but maybe we could start with a simple version that could be expanded from. What would be your top one or two functions that you would want it to do? Maybe choose one starting location?

2A: and if you want to do more, a trigger that activates at the same time so you can turn on a light or even your computer image

    or

2B: a mic that responds to you so when you say "thankyou" it replies, "your welcome" or if you say "activate self destruct" it counts down hehehe.

by the way i am a member of oxford hack space, and we had the luxury of Ben being in front of our stand at EMF image, the reason i am asking for this project is because i have no idea what to do!

thanks for the reply and please do have fun!

Ok cool. I wonder how difficult it would be to make it respond to specific voice commands. Like if you say "Lights" it'll turn the lights on, but only after you say "Hello." Neat idea! I'm going to keep hearing Hal 9000's voice in my head for this one.
