Wearable Air Cast with Digital Scale for weight bearing measurement

headsup
headsup over 9 years ago

Hey Ben,  Love your show!  I broke my leg in three places... attached are some fancy photos of a medical steel rod and small metal plate.  I wore an aircast (plaster is so 1980's) [fibreglass is sooo 1990's]...and eventually healed up pretty good... but during the difficult 'weight bearing' period I had a difficult time one-footing it onto a scale to see how much weight I could bear on my weak, pathetic, scaredy cat, broken leg...

I am not a great Maker (yet) but I did envision an air cast boot coupled with a digital or analog scale that would be used all over the world to help rehabilitate the wounded.  I enlisted a young maker in the making and he uncobbled a couple of digital scales I grabbed at Goodwill -

And that is where we made it with our project - Please consider helping.  A Maker in Guelph, Ontario, Canada.

Digital scales usually use load cells for measuring weight. Here is a good instructable for understanding how you could take apart an existing scale and then try and attach it to an air cast. Arduino Load…

I don't think I fully understand what you are looking for or maybe I just don't understand the problem in the first place. What exactly are you trying to measure and what exactly was the problem with using a typical bathroom scale? Do you need some sort of scale placed in the bottom of the air cast boot that would have a readout somewhere?

    The idea sounds intriguing.

    Hi, thanks for replying!

The problem with a broken leg is partially feeling very fragile and possibly fearful of putting too much weight on your leg. First stage is "non weight bearing" then you move to "partial weight bearing" and this is the phase that would benefit (or "Ben"efit) from a display right on the air cast.  The display could easily tell you what percentage of weight you are applying or in pounds or kilos. Thanks Team. Ask for more details if needed.
